Automotive Door Lock Repair
There are a myriad of things that could go wrong with your door lock that is powered. Automotive locksmiths are able to handle many of these issues on a regular basis.
If your car's power locks have stopped working, or make a buzzing or 'machine gun' noise when you lock or unlock them, you're dealing with an actuator that is dying. The actuator can be replaced quickly, but the process varies depending on the brand and model.
Broken or damaged lock cylinder
A damaged lock cylinder can be frustrating, especially when you're trying to get in your car after a break-in. Fortunately, a locksmith will usually be able to repair the cylinder quickly and inexpensively. A locksmith can also repair damaged door lock actuator, a tiny motor that turns the lock cylinder to open or close the door.
The lock cylinder operates in a similar manner to the lock mechanism of your home door: when you insert the key, it presses down on pins that are spring-loaded, that align them to a shearline, which allows you to turn the cylinder, and then unlock or close the door. The key could be rendered ineffective if the cylinder gets damaged or is stuck. You might be able to smooth the cylinder with graphite or WD-40 in certain cases. However, these solutions are not very effective.
The ignition lock cylinder is located on the right-hand side of the steering wheel, near the shift lever. It is housed in the electrical component that secures the ignition switch, usually connected to the steering column. It's difficult to get to the ignition lock cylinder. Many mechanics suggest replacing it instead of attempting to fix it.
To remove the ignition cylinder, first disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. You'll then need to remove any trim panel that covers the cylinder's area using a screwdriver to remove any fasteners holding it in the position. Then, use a pick, awl or screwdriver to loosen the lock cylinder retaining tab and take the lock cylinder straight out of the housing.
If the new mechanical key you purchased doesn't turn the ignition cylinder, try spraying WD40 on the cylinder for ignition lock and shaking the key. If vehicle security isn't working, try bumping the cylinder. To bump a lock, you simply insert the new mechanical key into the cylinder halfway and then push it in using a large handle screwdriver (rubber is best). Bumping a lock's cylinder could sometimes remove misaligned or displaced wafers that prevent the lock from turning.
Broken or damaged keys
If the car key is lost or is damaged, it may cause more issues than an ordinary lockout. This is why it's good to have an extra car key. Don't panic if you don’t have a spare. Your car key could be more simple to repair than you think.
The first thing to check is the battery and circuit board. If the circuit board and battery are fine it's possible that your key's grooves have worn away. This could cause the key to either not turn or stick in the ignition. Locksmiths usually fix this by sanding the grooves to match the mechanism.
Older keys are more prone to break because of the repeated strain from being inserted and turned in the lock. Keys can also break if are used as tools, like to break a soda bottle open or cut plastic packaging. Make use of pliers or a multipurpose tool instead of your keys for these tasks.
A locksmith can duplicate keys if they are barely identifiable. However, you'll need to prove ownership to be eligible for this service.
You can spray lubricant on your key, based on the type you have to help you remove it from the ignition. It is recommended to have a professional take the key from the ignition if it's stuck. It could cause damage to the locking mechanism, or even the ignition cylinder.
Some car insurance companies provide roadside assistance in the event of keys being lost or damaged. It is best to check your policy to see whether this is an option for you. If so the case, they'll typically provide someone to unlock your car door and assist you find your keys. They may even be able to provide you a replacement key on the spot, depending on what kind of key you own. This can help you save money and time in the long run.
Faulty Window Switches
A switch that is faulty could cause a window to change direction and move between up and down or not at all. There are electrical connections in the door panel that have to be removed to determine if there is an electrical problem with the motor of the window or the switch itself. It is recommended to first check for a burned fuse because this is often the cause of windows to stop functioning. After replacing the fuse it is possible to bypass the window switches. Connect the wires of the connector to a power source, such as an extension cord or a car battery. Once you have the wires connected to an external source of power, check the motor of your window by pressing the window switch. If the motor of the window functions normally and the switch isn't malfunctioning, then it is probably a mechanical issue with the window mechanism, its track, or perhaps a defective power window regulator.
If the motor of the window does not function and the switch is working properly, there could be a problem with the window guides that help to hold the window in the right position. They can be damaged or loosened, which could cause the window to slide along its tracks and block the motor assembly. This is a common issue with older cars with window regulators that are gear-type.
In certain instances, the power window actuators could be worn out or get stuck in their down or up position. These are the components that control the movement of a window and usually make noises that are buzzing or a surprising rattling sound when they fail. You can replace the actuators however, first you'll need take off your window panel.
The removal of the window panel depends on the model of the vehicle but is generally straightforward. After the panel has been removed, you'll have to take off any trim or covers that keep it in place. You'll then have to carefully probe the switch panels to determine the cause of the problem. If the switch panel is found to be defective, you can replace it with a new unit.
